Executive Summary

Shangjia Dong is an assistant professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, a core faculty member of the Disaster Research Center (DRC) at the University of Delaware, and an Early Career Research Fellow of the Gulf Research Program at the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM). He received his M.S. and Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering and a minor in Computer Sciences from Oregon State University. He then spent two years at the Texas A&M University at College Station as a Postdoctoral Research Associate.

Dong’s interdisciplinary research on smart and resilient urban systems is grounded in a network paradigm that transcends the boundaries between network science, civil engineering, and social science. He aims to establish an algorithmic and theoretical framework to assess community resilience and equity. His research endeavors involve the design and prototyping of engineering systems and solutions, fostering data integration, system analytics, machine intelligence, and risk-informed decision-making. This holistic approach facilitates the comprehensive assessment of infrastructure systems, critical infrastructure protection, effective disaster preparedness and response, and equitable resilience planning and climate change adaptation.
